2. The History of Presidents Day 2025

The origins of Presidents Day date back to George Washington’s birthday on February 22nd, 1732. Washington’s birthday was first celebrated as a federal holiday in 1885. However, the holiday didn’t remain static. In 1968, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was passed, moving the celebration of Washington’s birthday to the third Monday of February. The intention was to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers, and this change also led to the holiday’s broader association with all U.S. presidents.

The date of Presidents Day fluctuates depending on the year, but in 2025, it will fall on February 17th. While Washington and Lincoln remain the two most celebrated presidents on this day, Presidents Day is also an opportunity to reflect on the leadership of all U.S. presidents. From John F. Kennedy to Franklin D. Roosevelt, Presidents Day highlights their contributions to the country’s development.
